What an affiliate link is

If you click a link to a retailer and buy something, that retailer may pay us a percentage of the sale. The price you pay is the same either way. The commission comes out of the retailer’s margin, not your basket.

Which links are paid

Links to retailers in our What we’d buy boxes are affiliate links. So are some links inside the body of a piece. They currently include Lulu and Georgia and Blue Bottle Coffee, and may include other home and kitchen retailers over time.

In the page source, every one of them carries rel="sponsored nofollow noopener". That attribute is the machine- readable version of this page — it tells search engines the link is commercial, and it tells anyone auditing the site that we are not hiding it.

Which links are not

Links to other articles on this site, to our own pages, and to any source we cite are plain editorial links. They earn nothing.

What the money does not buy

  • It does not buy a recommendation. Plenty of things we recommend pay us nothing.
  • It does not buy a ranking. If the cheaper option is better, the cheaper option wins.
  • It does not buy silence. A product that fails gets written about the same way whether or not there is a commission attached.
  • It does not buy placement in a piece. Nothing is added to a guide because a programme pays well.

Why we do it at all

Because the alternative is advertising networks, sponsored posts, or charging readers. Of those, a commission on something a reader was going to buy anyway is the least intrusive. Our full standards are on the how we work page — that link is not an affiliate link, and neither is this one.

If you think we got it wrong

Write to hello@bhealthyblog.com. If a piece recommends something for reasons that look commercial rather than editorial, we want to know.
